The School of Computer Software at Tianjin University became one of the 35 National Demonstration SoftwareSchools granted by the Ministry of Education and State Development Planning Commission in 2001. Our School began to enroll students in September 2002. The master and doctoral program for Software Engineering was approved by the Ministry of Education. In 2009, a new round of discipline restructuring was launched at Tianjin University to meet the needs of developments in the field of creative culture in China and animation industry in Tianjin. Accordingly, a new School of Software was set up, combining the discipline of Software Engineering from the former school and the discipline of Animation, which was formerly in the School of Film. Nowadays, our School has more than 750 undergraduates and about 200 master and doctoral candidates on campus.
Currently there are two departments (Department of Software Engineering and Department of Visual Arts) in our School, and teaching and research facilities including software lab, network lab, software engineering lab, embedded systems and computer design lab, high performance computing and service lab, student innovation lab, two-dimensional animation studio, stop-motion animation studio, three-dimensional animation studio, digital synthesis room, digital recording room, animation workshop and animation studio. In addition, training bases are established both on campus and in Tianjin Huayuan Software Park.
Our School has built fine teaching and research environment, and cultivated a productive collaboration and communication mechanism with eminent universities at home and abroad, research institutes and IT enterprises. Thus, Intel Embedded Technology Lab, IBM Innovation Lab, Google-Android Lab, Microsoft Innovation Lab and Tencent Innovation Lab were established to train the practical abilities of our students.
Nowadays, a comprehensive teaching system has been formed, which combines professional and part-time faculties. Part-time teachers, with high academic capacity, good teaching ability, strong research strength and English competence are employed from institutions of higher learning, software and animation companies at home and abroad to undertake the teaching of some basic and specialized courses. In addition, our School develops efforts to introduce and train teaching faculties to equip them with engineering experience.
Meanwhile, our School strives to reform its course system and update its course contents catering to social needs and industry development. It also introduces excellent original foreign textbooks, and increases the percentage of bilingual programs in the whole curriculum. Besides, it steps up the communication and cooperation with famous universities and enterprises in the world to jointly train talents specialized in software engineering and animation who can meet the needs of the society. All these efforts are dedicated to increase the impact of Tianjin University at home and abroad.
